About the event

Come along with us on a wooly adventure! Learn the ancient skill of making your own yarn with a drop spindle. Wool growing is one of the most humane and sustainable ways to produce yarns, fabrics, and clothing!

We’ll take a walk to visit the farm’s rare breed Karakul sheep and learn about regenerative silvopasture practice. We’ll learn the skill of flick carding to prepare locks of fleece and then spin the prepared fiber into yarn on drop spindles. There’ll be lots to see and learn. For thousands of years, spinning together has been a way to connect and form community.

All materials provided. Open to everyone – you don’t even need to know what sheep look like! If you’ve ever been curious about how to spin your own yarn for all of your favorite fiber arts, this workshop is for you!

Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited, please register in advance! Ages 16+.

About the instructor: Heather Sloan has been spinning for over 35 years and knitting for over 50. She found the curly locks of fleece beautiful and was fascinated every time it got spun into gorgeous yarn. The process of taking fiber from the sheep’s back and transforming it into a sweater on her back is thrilling. Heather started her own studio called Handknit Handwoven LLC where she sells beautifully crafted pieces. She also teaches knitting and spinning private lessons for those interested in more advanced techniques. She loves knitting with her handspun and recently started incorporating weaving into her practice as well. In addition to all things fiber, she also makes silver jewelry, speaks fluent French, and is a marine geophysicist!
