Perennials Focused Farmer: Orchardist (Fruit & Nut Grower)

About the Role

We are looking for a perennial-focused farmer with a genuine passion for fruit and nut trees and a strong interest in developing diverse orchard and silvopasture systems. This role supports the Farm Manager in stewarding our orchard, fodder rows, and perennial understories. The ideal candidate has at least 4 seasons of orchard management experience and is excited about holistic orchard care, agroforestry, and biodiversity.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $26/hr and up, based on experience

  • Flexible schedule

  • Full-time: 20–30 hrs/week in winter, 40–45 hrs/week in spring–fall

  • Benefits: veggies and eggs, earned vacation days, federal holidays, sick days, employee-sponsored health insurance, 401k

  • 30-minute unpaid lunch

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plant, prune, trellis, weed, irrigate, mulch, fertilize, and propagate orchard and silvopasture trees.

  • Manage pests and disease using holistic, regenerative practices.

  • Develop, install, and maintain perennial rows and fodder systems.

  • Enhance habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects.

  • Coordinate harvests with the farm stand and distillery teams.

  • Keep detailed records and document orchard processes.

  • Assist with livestock rotation and choring.

  • Support vegetable, herb, and flower production as needed.

  • Oversee volunteer tasks and ensure safe, efficient workflow.

  • Operate tractors and equipment safely.

  • Represent AOOA with professionalism and warmth.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 seasons orchard management experience, preferably with holistic or ecological focus.

  • Deep love for fruit and nut trees and curiosity about diverse perennial systems.

  • Experience with agroforestry, alley cropping, or regenerative perennial design is a plus.

  • Strong communication, organization, and record-keeping skills.

  • Able to lift 50 lbs and perform regular farm labor involving bending, kneeling, and squatting.

  • Able to troubleshoot irrigation systems, equipment, and infrastructure.

  • Dependable, solutions-oriented, and comfortable working independently or with a team.

Note: Housing is not provided, and the farm is not easily accessible via public transit.
